llms.txt Validator

Check your llms.txt, or get one built from your sitemap.

Type your domain. See whether the file exists, how it parses, every section and link count, and a clear checklist of what to fix. No llms.txt yet? You get a starter file to copy or download.

Reads only your public llms.txt, llms-full.txt and sitemap. Results for a domain are cached for ten minutes.

A map is only as good as the pages on it.

Put the pages that already earn clicks at the top of your llms.txt.

This validator checks one file on one site. Murkuz connects Search Console, Analytics and Bing Webmaster to Claude or ChatGPT for every site you run, so you can ask which pages bring real visitors and build each site's llms.txt from that list.

What goes in an llms.txt file

The format comes from a proposal by Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI, published at llmstxt.org in September 2024. It is markdown, read top to bottom, and only the first line is required.

  1. 1
    # Name

An H1 with the name of your site or project. The only required part.

  2. 2
    > Summary

A blockquote with one or two sentences on what the site is and who it serves.

  3. 3
    Context

Optional plain paragraphs with anything an assistant should know before reading the links.

  4. 4
    ## Sections

H2 headings, each with a list of markdown links: - [Title](url): a short note.

  5. 5
    ## Optional

A section an assistant can skip when it needs a shorter context.

Who reads llms.txt today

Adoption is still early. No major AI company has confirmed that it reads llms.txt for ranking or citations. The file is used by coding agents, documentation tools and assistants that are pointed at a site directly. It takes ten minutes to publish, and it gives every one of those tools a clean list of the pages you most want read. Whether AI crawlers can reach those pages at all is decided by your robots.txt, which you can test with the AI crawler checker.

Frequently asked questions

What is llms.txt?+

llms.txt is a plain markdown file at the root of a site, for example yoursite.com/llms.txt, that gives AI assistants a short map of your most useful pages. Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI proposed it in September 2024, and the format is documented at llmstxt.org.

What does a valid llms.txt need?+

Only one thing is required: an H1 line with the name of the site or project. After that the format allows a blockquote with a one-line summary, optional paragraphs of context, and H2 sections that each hold a list of markdown links, optionally followed by a colon and a short note.

Can you show an llms.txt example?+

A minimal file looks like this: a line "# Your Site", a line "> One sentence on what the site is for", then "## Docs" followed by lines such as "- [Getting started](https://yoursite.com/start): setup in five minutes". A section called "## Optional" marks links an assistant can skip when it needs a shorter context.

What is llms-full.txt?+

llms-full.txt is a companion convention: one file with the full text of your key pages, so an assistant can load everything in a single request. It is not part of the core proposal, and plenty of sites ship llms.txt alone.

Do ChatGPT, Claude or Google use llms.txt?+

Adoption is still early. No major AI company has said it reads llms.txt for ranking or citations. It is cheap to publish, it helps agents and developer tools that do read it, and it keeps a clear map of your best pages in one place.

Is this llms.txt validator free?+

Yes. No login and no email. It reads only your public llms.txt, llms-full.txt and sitemap. If you have no llms.txt yet, it builds a starter from your sitemap that you can copy or download.

One file checked. Now ask which pages deserve to be on it.
